Newcomers Assistance

The Iraqi Home settlement services include providing assistance to the immigrants and refugees to settle and become positive members of the Canadian society.

The services are provided by specialised counsellors (in either individual or group settings) to support the immigrants and their families to face any problems related to their adjustment in the new community. Jointly with the client, Settlement Counsellors will help to set priorities, identify services needed, organise appointments and registration for appropriate programs.

Immigrant Settlement & Adaptation Program/Newcomer Settlement Program

These programs offer a variety of workshops and services including orientation workshops, information, referrals, guidance, translation, adjustment counselling, newcomer support groups, public education, family life education. Sessions are held regularly to provide information on settlement-related topics such as education, housing, employment, taxation and community resources.

Community Connections Volunteer Program

This volunteer program welcomes newcomers with Canadian residents who provide guidance and mentoring in a group setting. The program promotes cultural integration and is designed to:

  • assist immigrants/refugees to become established and contributing members;
  • promote community awareness and cultural sensitivity to the needs of immigrants/refugees;
  • encourage racial understanding and harmony among residents;
  • make new contacts through social activities and practice conversational English or French.

Services for Women, Youth & Seniors

Newcomer women, youth and seniors often face specific barriers to settling in Canada. Specialised services at the Iraqi Home include support groups, recreational and educational opportunities and more. All services are designed to support and assist women, youth and seniors to deal with the issues they face when trying to integrate into Canadian society. For more information,

Interpretation Services

Experienced professional interpreters are available at no cost to clients. Interpreters will assist with appointment setting and support clients at any Iraqi Home (by telephone or video-conferencing) in order to provide improved access to the services and programs offered.
